General considerations on posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (clinics, imaging and therapy)
نویسندگان
چکیده
The posterior fossa arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is uncommon and different from other intracranial AVM in its natural history, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and other features. Authors present a review of the actual procedures of diagnosis and treatment in the field of infratentorial cerebral arterio-venous malformations, based on the actual literature data. Pre-therapeutic considerations, such as clinical presentation and diagnostic evaluation, are initially discussed because they are crucial in choosing the optimal treatment. Posterior fossa AVMs merit multimodality intervention when feasible in most cases because of their higher risk of rupture and higher potential of morbidity and mortality. In addition, we present two significant cases treated in our department.

Management of posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations
BACKGROUND Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare vascular lesions, representing 7-15% of all intracranial AVMs. Although less frequent than supratentorial AVMs, they present higher rupture, morbidity, and mortality rates. Microsurgery, radiosurgery, and endovascular neurosurgery are treatment options for obliteration of those lesions. In this paper, we present a critical r...
متن کاملIncreased prevalence and rupture status of feeder vessel aneurysms in posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations.
BACKGROUND Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are considered to have a higher risk of poor outcome, as are AVMs with associated aneurysms. We postulated that posterior fossa malformations may be more prone to associated feeder vessel aneurysms, and to aneurysmal source of hemorrhage. OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence and hemorrhagic risk of posterior fossa AVM-associated fee...
متن کاملDural arteriovenous fistulas of the posterior fossa draining into subarachnoid veins.
PURPOSE To describe the clinical presentation, angioarchitecture, and risks and problems of therapy in patients with dural arteriovenous malformations of the posterior fossa draining into subarachnoid veins. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twelve patients with dural arteriovenous malformations of the posterior fossa draining into subarachnoid veins were studied. RESULTS These fistulas often presented ...
متن کاملThe correlation between hematoma volume and outcome in ruptured posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations indicates the importance of surgical evacuation of hematomas.
AIM The correlation between hematoma volume and outcome in ruptured arteriovenous malformations (AVM) with accompanying posterior fossa hematoma was retrospectively evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS Microsurgery operations were performed on 127 patients with intracranial AVM between January 1998 and January 2009 at our clinic. Fifteen (11.8%) patients were identified as suffering from posterior...
متن کاملLong-term Outcomes of Gamma Knife Surgery for Posterior Fossa Arteriovenous Malformations
The long-term outcomes of gamma knife surgery (GKS) in patients with posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) were retrospectively analyzed in 82 patients followed up for more than 5 years to evaluate the efficacy and safety. The median AVM volume at GKS was 0.95 cm(3). The prescribed dose to the AVM margin was median 18 Gy with 1-18 isocenters. The actual complete AVM obliteration ra...
